Part 1 We have a report from Ibaraki. Here’s Nakajima Sakura. Believe it or not, this white toy poodle is a police dog. Her name is Anzu. I am now in Tokai-mura. I am going to meet Suzuki Hirofusa, Anzu’s owner and trainer. I will tell you a very interesting story about her. Mr. Suzuki has been Anzu’s owner since March 2013. Anzu was three months old and in an animal shelter. Anzu’s previous owner had thrown her away. In fact, they were about to kill her. Mr. Suzuki took her out of there. There were already three German shepherds in Mr. Suzuki’s family. He had an idea of giving Anzu away to another person later. But after a few days, the German shepherds accepted Anzu into the family. So, Mr. Suzuki made a decision to keep her. Part 2 Mr. Suzuki’s job is a dog trainer with the Ibaraki Prefectural Police. He brought his German shepherds and Anzu to a training session. One day, he noticed that she was trying to “copy” the other dogs. So, just as an experiment, he said, “Stand!” “Sit!” “Down!” “Stay!” to Anzu. Anzu understood the words and did those actions. Then Mr. Suzuki decided to train her to become a police dog. He had never thought about a small police dog before he met Anzu. The training was difficult for Anzu. She was smaller than the German shepherds, so she had to work harder. She jumped over a low hurdle easily, but it took a while for her to jump over a high hurdle. Once, she was searching for something in the grass. Then a large bird almost attacked her. Anzu was lucky, because another dog saved her. Even though there were lots of challenges, Anzu didn’t stop the training. She looked very happy when Mr. Suzuki told her she did a good job. Part 3 Some people said Anzu could not become a police dog. However, she has proved that even a small dog can do great things. It’s true she is not as fast as other dogs because her legs are short. But she catches the smallest clues. Often, big dogs miss those kinds of clues. She is also useful in crowded places. A regular-size police dog is big, so a criminal can see it easily. But a small dog doesn’t get noticed. Even more important, she is often asked to look for missing people with a mental illness. She is cute, so they aren’t afraid of her. In October 2015, Anzu passed the police dog test. Since then, the Ibaraki Police has been accepting other small dogs as police dogs. Anzu is now working along with the German shepherds in a team.
